Pride and Prejudice Chronicled: An Interpretation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez' Cronica de una Muerte Anunciada

Abstract

An interpretation of Garcia Marquez' 1981 novel, presenting the story of a disastrous honor killing that takes place in a small coastal town in Colombia. The killers are not the only ones responsible for the murder. In this paper the question is posed as to what motivated the killing - whether it was a religiously, a racially, an economically or a culturally motivated killing. The interpretation finds an answer that shows that guilt can be found in the prevalent traditions of the Catholic Church, in the notions of love and honor, in the high esteem of virginity, in racial discrimination and in the attachment to money.
