This master's thesis deals with the use of the target language in the foreign language classroom, specifically EFL classes at Dutch secondary schools. The use of the target language in class, as supported by SLA theories and SLA pedagogy, appears to be highly dependant of the particular classroom context. From this thesis, it became clear that the amount of target language use in class differs per educational level (VWO, HAVO and VMBO) as well as lesson element (e.g. grammar instruction, speaking exercises). Besides that, the target language use in class is subject to other factors that are not or only partly under teachers' control. Finally, not all teachers appeared to be convinced that using the target language in class brings about an actual learning effect, and indeed little empirical research has been conducted to this matter. The greatest advantages that teachers experienced from using the target language in class, are a) an efficient way of training speaking skills and b) a means to overcome the fear of speaking a foreign language.
