Etnic minority women have a relatively unfavourable social position in Dutch society. The existing literature shows sport could be used as a means to stimulate social integration and participation and to ultimately achieve social change. Semi-structured interviews were held with nine women from different ethnic backgrounds who participated in sports at an organization for women only. Results showed ethnic minority women were empowerd by sport, through acquiring assets, (such as improved health and a larger social network) access and agency. Particularly important was the opportunity for women to participate in sports without men around. The positive effects of sport influenced etnic minority women on individual, family and society level, thus taking an important step in the direction of social change.
