Oostenrijk in het 'nieuwe Europa': de rol die het zich wenst

Abstract

Met de uitbreiding van de Europese Unie (EU) in 2004 leek de rol van kleine landen als Oostenrijk er alleen maar kleiner op te gaan worden, toch zag de Oostenrijkse regering het als een grote kans (Schüssel, 08-07- 2000).Dit leidt tot de vraag: Op welke wijze heeft de uitbreiding van de EU in 2004 invloed gehad op de rolopvatting van Oostenrijk in Europa? Hierbij worden drie rollen: Oostenrijks 'Mitteleuropa', Neutraliteit en 'anti-EU', geanalyseerd en vergeleken met het gedrag dat de Oostenrijkse regering in Europa vertoonde vanaf december 2002 tot juli 2005. De conclusie die hieruit getrokken kan worden is dat hoewel publiekelijk neutraliteit gepredikt wordt, Oostenijks 'Mitteleuropa' het politieke streven is.

With the enlargement of the Euopean Union (EU) in 2004 the role of small countries, as for example Austria, seemed to become only smaller. Despite this, the Austrian government saw the enlargement as a big possibility (Schüssel, 08-07- 2000).The question is: In which way influenced the enlargement of the EU in 2004 the role conception of Austria in Europe? Three roles were analysed in this study: Austrians 'Mitteleurope', neutrality, 'anti-EU'. These roles were compaired with the behaviour of the Austrian government in Europe from December 2002 till July 2005. The conclusion is that allthough publicly they preach neutrality, Austrians 'Mitteleurope' the political goal is.
