Since FlexusJeugdplein (FJ) started using the IPTmethodology, September 2007, FJ lost a clear insight into the criteria of providing inpatient or outpatient youth care to the target groups. This study examined these target groups by investigating whether the characteristics of juveniles and their families, gender, ethnicity, type of family and parents having educational problems could be linked to the inpatient or outpatient youth care of FJ via internalizing and externalizing youth problems. A self-made screening list was used to obtain these variables out of eighty indication for treatment statements of adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Then SPSS was used for statistical analysis. The results showed that none of the variables could be linked to the inpatient or outpatient youth care of FJ. Only gender could be linked to externalizing problems of juveniles. Boys specifically showed more externalizing problems than girls. Second ethnicity could also be linked to the externalizing problems of juveniles. Particularly native Dutch juveniles have more externalizing problems than the Dutch immigrant juveniles. No clear-cut distinction could be made between the characteristics of juveniles and their families and the inpatient or outpatient youth care of FJ. Other aspects may have played a part in defining these target groups, such as earlier received youth care and youth care’s current waiting lists. Additional research is recommended.
