dc.description.abstractThis historical research is a comparison between the perspectives regarding the image of deaf pupils from three Dutch deaf institutes in the time period 1890-1900. The difference in the image of the deaf pupils is viewed in the context of the religious and philosophic background of the institutes. This research was mainly done through qualitative research methods. Archive material has been analysed en encoded. The resulting data has been compared using the codes. Several differences between the images of the deaf pupils are found. These differences are more or less influenced by the religious and philosophic background of the institutes. Differences are found between the presupposition, the development and the uniqueness of the deaf pupils. The codes unfortunate person, character and the interference with the parenting of the deaf pupils were not strongly different from each other, and therefore might not be based on the backgrounds of the institutes
