This thesis provides an insight into the effects of dance as an empowering practice for the participants – in this case migrant women – and what meaning this has for society. Through an exploration of embodiment and corporeality I emphasize the need of a (re-)integration of body and mind and a re-valuation of the body and its possibilities in the process of becoming empowered; and how dance can create this. I will thereby go into the different levels in which the body can be perceived and the different levels in which empowerment can be achieved through the practice of dance. Through taking into account the empowering effects of dance, socio-cultural institutions (like Lasso) can effectively reach their goals to improve the culture participation of participants and promote their integration in society.
