The IJssel River, a tributary of the Rhine River, has formed a relatively small delta near Kampen (the Netherlands), which has been influenced by both fluvial and marine processes. Detailed analysis of a few hundred borehole descriptions, obtained from the subsurface of the present delta plain, clarified sediment characteristics and resulted in facies classification. Thereupon, palaeogeographic reconstruction of the origin and evolution of the IJsseldelta is made.
