This study investigates how communicative burden influences Chinese students' language use and cultural identity negotiation in Dutch English-Medium Instruction (EMI) classrooms. Using a mixed-methods approach, it develops and applies a dual-pathway framework, showing both suppressive effects (e.g., anxiety, silence) and enabling effects (e.g., coping strategies, intercultural growth), to reveal how students navigate linguistic, cultural, and structural challenges.
