This study represents an initial step toward understanding how prosody and nonverbal nonvocal behavior are linked in individuals with nonverbal or minimally verbal autism. Building on the arousal indices proposed by Burgoon et al. (1989), a novel coding scheme was developed to investigate how pitch features vary in relation to perceived arousal intensity and valence across two vocalization types: protophones and fixed signals.
