This thesis presents a new theory of control. It is structured around two independent papers: one on obligatory control (OC), in which I argue for a movement and PRO approach to OC (van Urk, submitted), and one on adjunct control, in which the locality of control into adjuncts is derived from a representational analysis of adjunct islands, inspired by treatments of the Coordinate Structure Constraint (Goodall 1987; Muadz 1991; Moltmann 1992; Fox 2000). The rest of the thesis is concerned with some remaining issues within this framework, specifically the properties of PRO and the question of what drives control.
