A review is conducted to explore the role of disturbance and climate change in the postglacial spread and population dynamics of the European beech (Fagus sylvatica) during the Holocene. Available research is placed in the context of the autecology of the tree to develop an understanding of the reasons behind the succesfull spead of the tree, especially in Northern Europe that contrasts with its spread during previous interglacials.
