Although anterior-posterior development post gastrulation is thought to be homologous among metazoans, several different strategies exist for developing the posterior. In this article we review the role of major effectors such as the homeodomain Cad/Cdx genes, the Wnt pahtway, the FGF pathway and the T-domain transcription factors throughout evolution.
