Background:The aim of this study is to gain more insight into the relationship between parenting stress of mothers, the application of parental structure and the experience of externalizing problem behavior oftoddlers (2-4 years). Specifically, it is examined whether parental structure has a mediating effect. Method:A total of 460 mothers completed questionnaires about their parenting stress, parenting behavior and views on the behavior of their children. The effect of parenting stress on externalizing problem behavior was tested using themediation analysis by Baron & Kenny (1986), correcting for parental structure. Results:The analyzes showed that there is a direct, positive and significant relationship between parenting stress and externalizing problem behavior.Significant negative relationships have also been found between parenting stress and parental structure and from parentalstructureto externalizing problem behavior. No evidence has been found for mediation by parental structure, the effect between parenting stress and externalizing problem behavior r emains almost the same. Conclusions:Parenting stress is a strong predictor for both externalizing problem behavior and less application of parental structure. In order to develop adequate interventions, follow-up research must focus on these strong connections in order to reduce externalizing problem behavior and improve parenting behavior.
