Valeur, fascinatie en verheffing: Exotische dieren in zeventiende-eeuwse stillevens uit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden

Abstract

In deze scriptie wordt de functie van niet-Europese vogels en zoogdieren in zeventiende-eeuwse, Zuid-Nederlandse stillevens onderzocht. Middels een kwantitatieve analyse op basis van de RKDimages-database wordt een beeld geschetst van de ontwikkeling van dergelijke stillevens tussen 1550 en 1700. Deze bevindingen worden gerelateerd aan zowel de omgang met exotische dieren als het gebruik van stillevens in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat stillevens met exotische dieren een onderdeel waren van de vroegmoderne verzamelcultuur, waarin zowel exotische dieren als stillevens begeerde verzamelobjecten waren. Dergelijke stillevens verspreidden zich van de hogere naar de lagere sociale klassen, en functioneerden als tekenen van rijkdom, gecultiveerde kennis en status. Deze scriptie draagt hiermee bij aan het huidige onderzoek naar stillevens en exotische dieren in de vroegmoderne cultuur, door het tot dusver onbelichte kruispunt hiervan te verkennen als onderdelen van één cultuurhistorisch fenomeen.

This thesis examines the function of the representation of non-European birds and mammals in seventeenth-century still-life paintings from the Southern Netherlands. A quantitative analysis based on the RKDimages-database offers an impression of the development of such still lifes between 1550 and 1700. This is further analysed in relation to the use of both exotic animals and still-lifes in the Southern Netherlands at the time. This analysis shows that still lifes with exotic animals were part of the early modern culture of collecting, in which both exotic animals and still lifes were coveted collectibles. Such still lifes spread from the higher to the lower social classes, and functioned as signs of wealth, cultivated knowledge and status. This thesis contributes to current research into still lifes and exotic animals in early modern culture by exploring the previously unexplored intersection of these subjects as parts of a single cultural-historical phenomenon.
