dc.description.abstractToddlerhood is a sensitive period in social-emotional development, in which the first social and emotional experiences of the child take place in the family context. In this research, it will be investigated whether the parenting practices ‘emotional support’ and ‘stimulation’ are related to the social-emotional development of toddlers between the ages 2 and 3 years old, and whether there are gender differences in this relation. Therefore, 243 mothers of healthy boys and girls between 24 and 36 months have completed the ASQ-SE and the CECPAQ, with which the social-emotional development of the toddler and the parenting practices of the parents are measured. Results of the hierarchical multiple regression analysis suggest that emotional support and stimulation primarily have a positive relation with the social-emotional development of the toddler. Furthermore, gender has no moderating influence on this relation. To conclude, it is important to identify problems in this relation in both boys and girls early on, because in this way, problems in the development can be prevented. Through interventions which are targeted to improve these parenting practices, problems in the development can be prevented.
