| dc.description.abstract | ELF communication is a widespread phenomenon. Since Dutch teenagers often use English online, this study was focused on their encounters with ELF features with regard to difficulties and strategies. Twenty-four Dutch teenagers were interviewed about their use of English in online situations. These situations include both speaking and chatting as interaction. Furthermore, they were interviewed about their ELT classroom situation with reference to the focus in the classes and attention to varieties of English. This study found that Dutch teenagers encounter ELF features in online communication. Furthermore, respondents indicated that in their ELT classes, the focus often lies on native-speaker models and grammar, which creates a contrast between the ELT classes and outside-classroom communication. | |
