Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this current study is to investigate the relationship between perceived competence about signalizing and discussing the several types of child maltreatment in combination with the highness of risk assessment of childcare professionals working with toddlers from two to four years old in the Netherlands. The current study also examined whether this relationship is mediated by the followed training about child maltreatment or conversations. It was expected that followed training about child maltreatment or conversation mediated the perceived competence about the several types of child maltreatment and the highness of risk assessment. Method: Several questionnaires were filled out by 66 childcare professionals. Linear and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze the results. Results: There is no relationship between the perceived competence of childcare professionals about the several types of child maltreatment and the highness of risk assessment. This relation is not mediated with training about child maltreatment or conversations. However, there is a significant relationship between the followed training about conversations and the perceived competence about discussing sexual maltreatment. Conclusion: The results of this study do not match previous findings, which might indicate that these findings are not suitable for the sample in the current study or there are some sampling problems. Future research should focus on the several types of child maltreatment and use a bigger sample of childcare professionals.
