Sleeping problems are a major problem for 20-40% of children and adolescents, and therefore also for their parents. However, little help is sought when the sleep problems are only mild or moderate. Despite the preventive added value, there are no effective low-threshold interventions for mild to moderate sleeping problems available yet. In the current pilot study, the effectiveness of the parent-to-child workbook was assessed. This workbook helps parents to teach their child to fall asleep and sleep through the night independently. In a one group pretest-posttest design, a total of 11 Dutch parents performed the 2-week intervention and completed online questionnaires that included items about the severity and frequency of the sleeping problems of their child. Two paired t-tests showed a significant decrease for both the severity and the frequency of the sleeping problems. These results showed a promising picture for the effectiveness of the parent to-child workbook as an approachable method for sleeping problems. Future studies addressing the limitations of the current pilot study are warranted in order to obtain conclusive results concerning the effectivity of this intervention and its potential value to the well-being of both children and their parents.
