Research entailing the perception of samurai on warfare and how this perception changed during the 16th century after Japan's first contact with Europe. The research is aided by visual representations of battles painted during the 16th and 17th century. These images portray the ideals samurai held on warfare and are contrasted by the harsh realities of 16th century battle in Japan.
