Introduction. Several studies have shown that there is a relation between educational level, self-control and cannabis use. However, evidence on the amount of influence of the two factors, especially in combination, is not yet clear for Dutch adults. In this study, we investigated whether educational level and self-control, both individually and combined, had a predictive influence on cannabis use in Dutch adults. 2 control variables, age and sex, were taken into account, as they have a lot of influence on cannabis use. Method. A total of 87 Dutch adults between 20 and 65 years old participated in this research. Participants had to fill in an online survey where demographic details were asked. It also contained the CUDIT-R, the BSCS, the SURPS, the SCL-90 and a visual probe task. Results. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis first showed that the control variables both have a significant effect on cannabis use. Second, self-control had a significant negative effect on cannabis use. Educational level and the interaction-effect were found to have no significant effect on cannabis use. Conclusion. No relation was found between educational level and cannabis use and the moderator self-control on educational level and cannabis use had also no significant effect. Conversely, self-control is a significant predictor of cannabis use. To obtain more knowledge about predictors of cannabis use in Dutch adults, further (clinical) research is recommended.
