This study investigated parental attitudes about the Sexual Double Standard [SDS], peers’ SDS attitudes, adolescent gender, and the interactions between them in relation to adolescents’ SDS attitudes between 16 and 18 years old. SDS attitudes are evaluations of men’s and women’s sexual behaviour, ranging from traditional to reversed. People with traditional attitudes evaluate dominant men positively, while women are evaluated negatively for the same behaviour. Concerning reversed attitudes, women are evaluated positively when they are dominant, while dominant men are evaluated negatively. The participants (N = 259) were high school students living in the Netherlands. Participants filled out online surveys, including experimental vignettes, to assess their SDS attitudes. Participants evaluated boys and girls based on their sexual behaviour. Besides that, they answered questions about their parents’ and peers’ attitudes. After testing of the assumptions, a hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed. Results indicate that parents’ and peers’ SDS attitudes do not significantly predict adolescents’ SDS attitudes. Adolescent gender was not a significant predictor of adolescents’ SDS attitudes either. Finally, the interactions between parents’ and peers’ SDS attitudes and adolescent gender do not significantly predict adolescents’ SDS attitudes. The results highlight the similarities between boys and girls in their development of SDS attitudes. Future studies should elaborately investigate the contribution of religion to SDS attitudes in adolescence and should distinguish between explicit and implicit SDS attitudes.
