Parenting stress influences the development of infants. When mothers with babies experience high levels of parenting stress they become less responsive towards their babies which can result in unsafe attachment styles. In this pilot study research has been done on whether mothers with and without mental health problems experienced a change in perceived parenting stress after participating in a “Mindful with your Baby” (MmB) training. Mothers of three different groups filled out the Parenting Stress Questionnaire (OBVL): mothers referred from specialized mental health care (SGGZ) (n=12), mothers referred from basic mental health care (BGGZ) (n=5), and mothers without reference of mental health care (n=4). The questionnaire was filled out before attending the first training session and directly after the last training session. A mixed model ANOVA was conducted to determine statistical significance. Parents experienced significantly less total parenting stress (small effect size), less problems with parenting (medium effect size), a less depressed mood (medium effect size), less role limitations (small effect size), and less health issues (medium effect size) after participating in the training. No significant effect was found for problems in the parent-child relationship. Due to the small sample size future research with larger samples is needed to confirm the results. Despite the limitations of this study it seems that the MmB training is effective in decreasing perceived parenting stress as measured by the OBVL in all parenting groups.
