This study assessed the extent of inhibitory control and emotion regulation problems of pre-schoolers as predictors of teacher-student conflict and which of these was the strongest predictor. Pre-schoolers aged three till seven-years-old (n = 137), 51,1% boys, from eight preschools across the Netherlands were studied using questionnaires. The analysis is conducted using multiple regression models and was controlled for age, sex and conduct problems. Higher inhibitory control, emotion regulation and conduct problem scores predicted higher teacher-student conflict. Furthermore, inhibitory control problems seem to predict more conflict than emotion regulation problems. This suggests that both inhibitory control and emotion regulation problems predict teacher-student conflict and inhibitory control is the strongest predictor.
