Relatie tussen getalbegrip bij kleuters uit groep 2 van het reguliere basisonderwijs en de thuissituatie

Abstract

Background: Several studies investigated the relationship between number sense of pre-schoolers and home environment. This research investigated the differences in number sense for boys and girls, and the relationship between number sense and home environment. Home environment is divided in three aspects: parent’s educational level, birth order and the degree of watching educational television. Number sense is measured by the Utrechtse Getalbegrip Toets – Revised (UGT-R). Aim: The aim of this research is to investigate whether there is a relationship between home environment and number sense of children in second grade of elementary school in the Netherlands. Results: A significant difference is only found for the aspect ‘resultatief tellen’ of the UGT-R between boys and girls. Significant differences are also found for parent’s educational level. Children of parents with high level education have a higher score at the UGT-R than children from parents with a low educational level. Conclusion: In this research, it can be concluded that there is no relationship between number sense and home environment for the aspects birth order and educational television and no difference between number sense of boys and number sense of girls. Only parent’s educational level is related to number sense. Further research on this subject is needed to generalize the results.
