In this research the relationship between language and executive functioning was examined. The executive functions under investigation were working memory, cognitive flexibility, conflict inhibition and delay inhibition. Language has been defined as language development and being raised monolingually or bilingually. Toddlers aged 2 till 4 participated in this research. The toddlers did several tasks that measured executive functioning and language development. Using an ANOVA it was found that there doesn’t exist a difference in the development of executive functioning between monolingual and bilingual toddlers. Using bivariate correlations it was found that there exists a positive relationship between language development and the development of working memory, cognitive flexibility and conflict inhibition in toddlers. This relationship wasn’t found for delay inhibition. Conclusions regarding the differences between monolingual and bilingual toddlers in executive function development could not be drawn, because of the sample size and the validity of several executive function tasks. Considering these restrictions, it is recommended to use a bigger sample size and to do more research for validating some executive function tasks for future research. Despite these restrictions this research has societal value and is it recommended for future research to keep in mind ethical aspects because this improve research quality.
