The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between parenting behavior (warmth/ support, negative control and psychological control) and warmth and conflict in the sibling relationship at the age of 4 to 6 years. The study also tried to examine differences in parenting behavior between mothers and fathers. Furthermore, this study tried to investigate the effects of specific sibling gender combinations on parenting and the sibling relationship. Participants were 302 parents who filled out questionnaires on parenting behaviour and sibling relationship (cross-sectional design). Results indicated a significant positive effect of warmth/ support on sibling warmth and a significant negative effect on sibling conflict. Negative control showed a significant effect on conflict but not on warmth. No significant effect of psychological control for both sibling warmth and sibling conflict was found. Moreover, differences were found for mothers and fathers concerning parenting; mothers seemed to give more warmth/ support than fathers did. No differences were found in negative and psychological control. No evidence was found of differences in parenting related to the specific sibling gender combinations. The different aspects of parenting and the quality of the sibling relationship are discussed.
