Abstract This study examined users’ quality of participants in the Futsal Chabbab project at Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The Dutch government provides funding to sport related projects which aim to help adolescents with a diversity of problems. The aim of this study was to reveal specific coaching qualities which are apparently successful. These findings are being used to improve the development of the project. The expectations and experiences of the participants were used as a guideline in this study. The combination of quantitative and qualitative data provided interesting insights. At first questionnaires were held among boys in two different neighbourhoods. In addition, in-depth interviews were held with 11 boys to gather specific information about the content of the project, received relational support and the approach of the coach in changing the adolescents’ behaviour. Results showed that the participants were satisfied about the project. However, a few respondents were displeased about some parts, such as the additional homework lessons and the neighbourhood contribution. It was found that the coach invests a significant amount of time attaining developmental tasks. By completing these tasks, behaviour can be changed. The most interesting outcome was the prioritization of relational support. Results showed that the quality of information of the coach is very important to the participants. The same result was found at all dimensions of emotional support: trust, support and appreciation. The adolescents felt that the coach should respect someone’s autonomy. Interestingly, they felt the same about setting limits in regulating behaviour.
