This thesis discusses the novel 'Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights' by Salman Rushdie. In the novel, reality and fantasy frequently overlap. That is why the connection of Salman Rushdie and magic realism is discussed. The Western setting and the multicultural characters of the novel can be connected to the concept of transculturality, which is looked into. Both magic realism and transculturality are used to portray tension between fundamentalism and rational thought. In conclusion, it will be argued that oppositions which at first seem rigid, become hybrid. This makes for an intricate network of interwoven cultures, literature, and beliefs.
