This Bachelor Thesis focuses on the way in which the literary genre of the essay connects with the reader by establishing a personal, intimate and dialoguing relationship. The study is based on theoretic literary study of a selection of 16 short essays from the bundle ‘La vida desnuda’ (‘the bare life’), written by the Spanish authoress Rosa Montero. Each selected essay contains the three principal characteristics on which this research focuses: the autobiographic presence of the writer herself in her work, the dialogue with her readers and the resulting intimate tone. The analysis has a triple structure existing of a section about the representation of Rosa Montero herself in her essays, a section about the presence of the reader and a section about the interaction between the previous two. This thesis emphasizes the tools that Rosa Montero uses to connect with her readers and the corresponding effects on the reader. The analysis is relevant, because the essay is a contemporary and changing literary genre that is characterized by a modern interactive way to connect with the reader. The three selected characteristics of the essay: the ‘selfie’, intimate tone and dialogue, are applied to the essays of Montero and are analyzed and interpreted extensively. Furthermore, the study stresses how often, when and how the three occur. What is more, attention is paid to the type of verbs the writer attributes to the three categories of participants in her essays, namely: herself, the reader and the interaction between these two.
