Background: To address differences in parental needs, the Preventive Child Health Care (PCHC) service has developed ‘care pathways’. These aim to improve provided care by giving the needs of children and parents center stage. Parents of children with a low risk on developmental and parenting problems (as assessed with the Structural Problem Analysis of Raising Kids (SPARK)) are invited to continue their childcare digitally in the form of e-consultations. It is currently unclear what types of parents prefer or do not prefer to participate in e-consultations. Research question: What is the influence of family, parental and nurse characteristics on parents’ choice for e-consultation during regular consultations to the PCHC when their child is 18 months old? Method: A quantitative study was performed using a cross-sectional observational design. The main study parameters concerned family, parental and nurse characteristics. Data were collected via questionnaires and electronic health records. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: Only the nurse characteristic ‘work experience’ proved to be a significant predictor of parents’ choices for e-consultations. The characteristics ‘mother’s education level’, ‘child’s behaviour’ and ‘work experience’ had a significant influence on nurses’ choice to discuss e-consultation. Some nurses barely discussed or did not discuss the topic of participating in an e-consultation. Conclusion: Parents’ choices to participate in e-consultations were mainly influenced by the nurses’ work experience and willingness to discuss e-consultation. The nurses’ choice to discuss e-consultation with parents was found to be influenced by characteristics related to the mother, the child and the nurse. Recommendations: The current implementation of e-consultation needs to be reviewed. Findings can then be used to implement the e-consultation care pathway in other organizations.
