dc.description.abstract | Abstract
Background: A report with details over the experiences of adult patients, about the care
received at an Accident and Emergency department (A&E department), gives insight
information about possible quality improvements. The Emergency Department Questionnaire
(EDQ) is translated into Dutch. At this moment there is no information known about the
content validity of the Dutch version of the EDQ.
Objectives: This study gives an answer to the question:”What’s the content validity of the
Dutch version of the Emergency Department Questionnaire (EDQ)”. The aim is to develop a
valid questionnaire about patients experiences on an A&E department in a Dutch hospital.
Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study comparing three focus groups. Patients who
had rich information about the experiences on the A&E department are specifically selected
by the researchers. The patients went for treatment to an A&E department, of an academic
hospital, in the months March and April 2009.
Results: The patients and researchers decided that, the Dutch version of the EDQ, needs an
extension. This extension contains a core question about transfer. All the people in the focus
groups had the Dutch nationality en no one had a code red assigned at the arrival at the A&E
department.
Conclusions: The current version of the Dutch translation of the EDQ needs adjustment.
The core questions must be extended by transfer. The power of this study is the use of three
focus groups.
Recommendations: More research is needed to look at the implications of cultural aspects
and patients who have had a code red assigned. When there is a new concept of the Dutch
translation of the EDQ, the next step should be member checks (importance study) followed
by a reliability study. | |
