Background: This thesis compares the participation during the process of Moroccan juvenile suspects and their parents with the participation during the process of Dutch juvenile suspects and their parents in the Netherlands. Research on the cause of the problems of Moroccan youth with, and their behavior to, the police and the justice system in the Netherlands point out different causes. The main causes are: problematic situations at home with many cultural differences which lead to diverse conflicts; low SES accompanied with unemployment, stress and under stimulation; group/gang development as consequence of bad housing; suspicious cultural background; and low intelligence of many Moroccan youth. The Dutch youth law and the youth sentence meetings are described in line of this focus. Method: Through observations during youth sentence meetings in the courts of Utrecht, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, the pedagogical aspects and the process participation of the Moroccan and Dutch suspects and their parents are observed. A questionnaire is also used to get information of the perception and the comprehension of the suspects and their parents. Results: The observations show little differences in the use of pedagogical aspects in the different courts. The process participation of the suspects differed on a few subjects, particularly their laconic attitude and their comprehension differed. The differences in perception were only found in the feelings of being Dutch. The parents also differed on this point, the experience of cultural differences in contact with the police and the justice system is in line with this difference. Conclusion: In every court pedagogical aspects are used, little differences are found. The process participation of Moroccan suspects and their parents differed on several points compared to the process participation of Dutch suspects and their parents.
