dc.description.abstract | Social status is important to individuals. People always live in groups
and within these groups there is always a status hierarchy. Ethologists
explain social status in terms of social dominance. Hawley describes
social dominance as the control of resources in her Resource Control
Theory. In this theory two behavioral strategies are central for the
gaining of recourses, prosocial and coercive strategies. This study
expands on this theory by exploring a new strategy, inspirational
behavior. Hypothesized is, after combining Resource Control Theory
and the Socioanalytic Theory, that the inspirational strategy will be
effective. Besides that the moderating role of gender was examined.
Participants is this research where 619 Dutch adolescents. Data was
gathered using peer-rating questions. Data showed that inspirational and
coercive strategies where most effective by gaining resource control,
prosocial strategies seemed to be less effective. This study expands on
previous theory, and makes therefore interesting suggestions for future
research. | |
