Aim The expert system of Driestar Educatief, ZIEN!VO, has been revised because of developments in educational law in the Netherlands. The present study investigates the reliability and validity of the social safety statements of the ZIEN!VO students questionnaire. Based on the findings, adjustments may be considered. Method Data were collected from a select sample. Participants were 181 students of two different schools, in the age of 12-15. There were two measuring moments. The social safety part of the questionnaire consists of three clusters: Well-being, Safety experience and Safety inroad. Reliability was measured by internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha) and test-retest reliability. validity by an exploratory factor analysis. Results Most of the Cronbach’s Alphas were sufficient or good, but the test-retest reliability of the Safety inroad was inadequate. The exploratory factor analysis resulted in a five factors solution, because some items of the Well-being and Safety Inroad clusters load on other factors. The output of the analyzes indicates that the aspects Teacher relationship, Physical safety and Home-situation differed from the expected concept. Conclusion The ZIEN!VO questionnaire currently has acceptable measurement properties, but adjustments have to be made for an optimal reliable and valid questionnaire. Follow-up research is needed, using a random sample involving special education.
