| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to investigate the way Argentinians are represented in two television programs: the Dutch soap called Julia’s Tango and the telenovela from Argentina, namely Sos Mi Vida. The two programs are compared to see if the following hypothesis can be supported: the Dutch soap contains more stereotypes than the Argentinian telenovela. With a base of 10 episodes per televisionprogram, 6 topics are investigated: unreliability, flirting and sex, the food culture, the character of the Argentinians, their customs and habits, and the relationships between family members. By means of these topics, various quotations were written down in order to make an objective comparison.
This thesis includes an introducion which presents an overview of the relevance of this study, it also contains what has been done in this research field concerning stereotypes in television series and it includes a theoretical framework based on theories about stereotypes, imagology and theories which are discussing specific topics related to Latin cultures, such as familismo. Due to these theories is believed that the Dutch soap uses more stereotypes than the Argentine telenovela. This research provides also a description of the corpus, an explaination of the method, an analysis in which a conclusion has been formed on the basis of sub-questions and sub-hypotheses. The final conclusion shows that the Dutch soap does not contain more stereotypes in comparison with the Argentinian telenovela. In the last part of this study the researchers reflect on this result and on their own process of analyzing a soap and telenovela. | |
