In this thesis the poetica of the Italian poet-painter Filippo De Pisis (1896-1956) is examined. Although he became famous for his painting and is considered primarily as a painter rather than a poet, this thesis examines his poetics using his poetry as a starting point. While the specialist literature examined has proved to be inadequate regarding De Pisis’ poetry, I have tried to fill the gap by providing an original reading of his poetic work. Since it has nevertheless proved impossible to completely separate his work as a poet from his output of a painter, also his painting is discussed. This comparative research into the poetics of De Pisis was made inductively through a close reading of two of his poems. These results were enriched with a partial lexicometric analysis of his volume Poesie (Garzanti, 2003), which brought to light the general content and style of his poems. In addition, an overview of his pictorial work has been presented to establish his pictorial poetics. The outcomes, thereupon, are used to compare the poetics of both disciplines. An osmotic relation has been established between both disciplines. Furthermore, results show that the themes of both are convergent, though differently embodied. His poems are compositions of dreamy memories, while his paintings could be interpreted as visions on life. Both poetics of De Pisis are full of contrasts and dualisms with a bitter overtone. This study shows that the poetics of both Filippo De Pisis’s poetry and his painting coincide.
