This study examines the added value of measuring the cognitive dimension of job crafting relative to the scale developed by Tims et. al. (JD-R crafting; 2011). Although Wrzesniewski and Dutton described three dimensions of job crafting (task, relational and cognitive crafting), Tims et. al. omitted the cognitive dimension in their often-used scale. In 2013 Slemp and Vella-Brodrick developed a new scale based on all three dimensions introduced by Wrzesniewski and Dutton. Data were collected via an online survey in which participants (n = 100) completed a questionnaire that included the three dimensions of job crafting plus a number of possible correlates. Results showed that cognitive crafting did have a significant effect on the outcomes, but only significantly improved on of the outcomes relative to JD-R crafting. However, also JD-R crafting had only minimal effect on the outcomes, possibly by the poor reliability of the scale in this study. It is concluded that job crafting is too complex to be explained only from the JD-R model. In this study, no evidence has been found to omit the cognitive dimension in the job crafting scale.
