In this study, differences in relations between the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship on one hand and internalizing and externalizing problem behavior and self-esteem on the other were examined for residential (N = 33) and non-residential (N =33) adolescents. A total sample of 66 Dutch boys (mean age 15.94) completed a self report questionnaire. The results showed a significant correlation between a negative quality of the parent-adolescent relationship and internalizing problem behavior. In contrast, a negative quality of the parent-adolescent relationship was only associated with externalizing problem behavior for the non-residential adolescents. It is possible that a negative quality of the parent-adolescent relationship is of less influence to residential adolescents as to non-residential adolescents. In addition, it is possible that residential adolescents maintain idealized perceptions of their ‘self’ and of relationships with others, which they seem to use as a defense mechanism to prevent them from getting harmed by negative responses.
