The objective of this research was to examine the relationships between knowledge of the ‘Vreedzame Wijk’ (VW) and attitude towards the program, parental competence and community involvement of parents. The relationships between knowledge of the VW and three background variables: gender, ethnicity and school were also studied. When the results show that knowledge of the VW is positively associated with the three main variables, whereas parents have an insufficient level of knowledge, the program can be improved by increasing this knowledge. The parents who were included in this study live in Volewijck, a neighbourhood in Amsterdam, where the VW has been implemented since 2013. A total of 116 parents were questioned via schools, at playgrounds, schoolyards and through online self-reports. The results show that there is no significant association between knowledge of the VW and the three main constructs: attitude, parenting skills and community involvement of the parents. Only one background variable was significantly associated with knowledge of the VW, namely the kind of school the children attend. The lack of significant results can be attributed to insufficient implementation of the VW program in the neighbourhood. When better implemented, further research can provide more insight into the associations between knowledge of the VW and the three main constructs.
