Previous studies regarding parental self-efficacy, parental attributions and parenting behaviors have primarily focused on how parents act and what is best for the development of children. However, little is known about why parents act in a certain way towards their children. The present study examined which parental characteristics influence parenting behaviors, while using a representative sample of 175 mothers and 86 fathers with a child between the age of 24 to 47 months. Participants completed self-report questionnaires. Analyses revealed that the degree of parental self-efficacy was similar for fathers and mothers. In addition, parental attributions made by fathers and mothers did not differ. These findings are contrary to what is found in previous studies. However as expected, parental attributions are a mediating factor in the relationship between parental self-efficacy and positive and negative parenting behaviors. The present findings can contribute to the development of parenting programs.
