| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between parental media mediation and television use in children aged 4 to 12 years. A relation was expected between parental media mediation and the amount of minutes the child is watching television as well as the type of television program the child especially watches. To collect the data, an online survey among 301 parents is used. Only Dutch-speaking parents with a child aged 4 to 12 years and with access to various types of media participated in the study. The results showed that there is no significant link between parental media mediation and the amount of minutes the child is watching television. Additionally, the results showed that there is a significant link between active parental mediation and the child’s educational television use and between co-viewing and the child’s entertaining television use. There was no significant link between restrictive parental mediation and the child’s violent television use. | |
