Translating Mark Haddon's The Pier Falls

Abstract

This thesis analyses and translates Mark Haddon’s short story “The Pier Falls,” published in 2014 in The New Statesman. The goal of the analysis is to explain the choices made in the translation and provide clear reasoning for the translational strategies used. It will also provide relevant background information on Mark Haddon and his previous work. The analysis follows Christiane Nord’s four categories of translational problems and links these to elements from “The Pier Falls.” Emphasis will be laid on the journalistic writing style, the technical terms used and the character descriptions.
