dc.subjectThis thesis nuances the polarized understanding of tension between Russia and the West that figures in historiography of the Russian Modernization debate between liberals and conservatives during the time of the Great Reforms. It does so by analyzing the perspectives of two major periodical publications, the liberal journal Vestnik Evropy and the conservative newspaper Moskovskie Vedomosti, on the 1863 Polish Uprising and the 1871 Unification of Germany.
