The symptoms and the consequences of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans show the necessity for an effective treatment. Trauma-focused interventions are recommended by the treatment guidelines, but there is controversy about the effectiveness. The present study focused on this subject and on the factors that might influence the effectiveness of the treatment, like therapy adherence and missed sessions. Data were obtained by self-report measures before and after 6 months of treatment. Linear regressions and t-tests analyses were conducted using the longitudinal data sample to test predictions in 65 veterans reporting PTSD. Results revealed that trauma-focused intervention did not decrease symptoms of PTSD and it was no more effective than non-trauma-focused interventions. Other results revealed that therapy adherence did not strengthen the decrease in PTSD at trauma-focused interventions and trauma-focused interventions did not have more missed sessions than non-trauma-focused interventions. These results were not expected and explanations are discussed, but it suggest that trauma-focused interventions are not tolerate worse. Further research is recommended to the effectiveness of trauma-focused treatments for veterans and take into account individual difference and design limitations.
