| dc.description.abstract | Aim: The aim of the present study was to examine the relation between parenting behavior of fathers and quality of sibling relationships of preschoolers. Method: 365 Dutch fathers with at least two children, one being between four to six years old, participated in the study. A select convenience and snowball sample have been used. Warmth and conflict of the sibling relationships of preschoolers were measured by the PRE-SIB. Parenting behavior of fathers (warm parenting behavior, positive discipline, negative control and stimulating parenting behavior) was measured by the CECPAQ. Results: Correlation analyses showed significant links between paternal parenting behavior and quality of sibling relationships. Results from the regression analysis for warmth, showed that paternal warm and stimulating parenting behavior have a significant positive effect on warmth in sibling relationships. Results from the regression analysis for conflict showed that paternal positive discipline and negative control have a significant positive effect, and warm parenting behavior a significant negative effect, on conflict in sibling relationships. Conclusion: In conclusion, more paternal warm parenting behavior, stimulating parenting behavior, positive discipline and less negative control were associated with more warmth in sibling relationships. In addition, less paternal warm parenting behavior and more negative control are linked to more conflict in sibling relationships. Further research should focus more on examining the relation between all four concepts of paternal parenting behavior together and warmth and conflict in sibling relationships of preschoolers, more insights and knowledge could then be acquired. | |
