In this thesis I will look at the critical debate around the activist protest group Femen in relation to the notion of transnational feminism. The term transnational feminism implies a global collective struggle for women. How feminists think about this concept is determined within the transnational feminist discourse. In the critical debate, Femen is accused of a non-inclusive form of feminism in relation to the differences between women. For this reason, critical feminists argue that Femen’s activities cannot be seen as feminism. By way of a critical discourse analysis of the debate around Femen, this thesis shows that intersectional theory is seen as obvious knowledge or ‘common sense’, in the transnational feminist discourse. This notion of common sense is produced and reproduced in the debate through the positioning of Femen as the unknowing ‘object’, as opposed to the critical feminists as the knowing ‘subject’. Through the uncovering of the hierarchical positions and the knowledge that is presumed as common sense in the debate, this thesis provides a new perspective on the concept of transnational feminism.
