dc.description.abstractUpon endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, the unfolded protein response (UPR) triggers cellular mechanisms to restore ER homeostasis. Aberrancies in lipid homeostasis can cause alterations in biochemical and biophysical properties of the ER membrane, which impair ER function and induce UPR signaling. The UPR is also involved in regulation of lipid metabolism and membrane biogenesis, indicating a link between ER-stress and lipid homeostasis. In this review, we will discuss how alterations in lipid metabolism can activate the UPR, as well as how the UPR alters lipid metabolism to relieve stress from the ER.
