| dc.description.abstract | Inaccuracies in a work of fiction will damage its reliability. It is important for authors to keep true to the world they intend to portray. Therefore, important aspects included in a work of fiction will need to be thoroughly investigated. The aim of this particular study was to obtain information on repressed memories and to acquire skills in describing a case of repressed memories in an original work of fiction. To achieve this goal, the content of this thesis has been constructed as follows: Firstly, the psychological background of repressed memories has been investigated, including terminology, overlap with other disorders and symptoms. This information was subsequently used to critically examine the novel The Memory Game by Nicci French, in which the main character is trying to regain a repressed memory of witnessing a murder. Thereafter, a new piece of fiction has been presented, the plot of which revolves around the repression of a traumatic memory in which both the research on psychology and the manner in which French portrays the retrieval of repressed memories has been kept in mind. Finally, explaining the influences of this study, the original work of fiction has been reflected upon. | |
