Abstract Biogas is a form of renewable energy that can be used on a small scale. This is ideal for rural areas that are far away from the electricity grid and general infrastructure. Lack of access to energy is a major problem in Africa (and thus Tanzania), and especially in the rural areas. With help of SNV and HIVOS, the Tanzanian Domestic Biogas Programme has started up a programme to implement biogas in the more rural areas. The goal is to improve the livelihood of the rural population in Tanzania through exploiting the market and non-market benefits of domestic biogas. The biogas sector in Tanzania is facing some changes in the near future. Biogas Constructing Enterprises are being set up, in the hope that these companies one day will carry the private biogas sector.
